Franz Gessner
Like his older brother Hubert, Franz Gessner also graduated from the state technical school in Brno (in 1898), after which he worked for a number of builders in Opava. In 1903–1906, he studied architecture under professor Otto Wagner at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. He undertook a number of study trips through Europe, visiting Italy, Spain, Germany and Denmark. In 1905–1912, he and his brother Hubert ran an architecture studio together in Vienna, designing a number of public buildings in Vienna and other cities in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. In 1912, Franz went independent, establishing himself mainly as a designer of industrial buildings. In 1914, he began working for the Vienna-based Österreichische Industriewerke Warchalowski, Eissler & Co. During the Second World War, Gessner worked in the studio of Eugen Kastner and Fritz Waag, which designed buildings for the armaments industry. He remained active as an architect until 1960, and besides industrial buildings he also did numerous residential structures and spa buildings and was active in interior and exhibition design.
