Franz Krauss von

Architect

After studying under Karl König and later under Viktor Luntz at Vienna’s Technical University (1882–1887), Krauss attended Friedrich Schmidt’s master class at the Academy of Fine Arts. He gained practical experience in Worms and Munich (with Heinrich Schmidt) and in 1889–1894 worked for the Viennese studio of Fellner & Hellmer, where he met Josef Tölk, with he founded the Atelier für Architektur in 1895. The studio enjoyed rapid success and realized dozens of private (apartment buildings, villas, tombs) and public commissions (theatres and schools). The company also entered various competitions throughout Austria-Hungary, many of which published in the magazine Der Architect. In 1911, Franz Krauss habilitated at the Vienna Academy, where he also taught, and in 1913 he was appointed a full professor at Vienna’s Technical University. His work earned him numerous honours. After the death of Josef Tölk in 1927, Krauss began to collaborate with the studio of Theiss & Jaksch. Upon retiring in 1934, he resigned from all public offices and in protest against the Austrofascist regime of the time, he refused an award for his services to Austria.
