Apartment building

The apartment building with shops designed by Endre Steiner, an architect of Jewish origin, was built on the corner of Čápkova and Gorkého streets in 1937-38. The apartment building was commissioned by Hugo Hecht, who had another apartment building built at  20 Čápkova Street one year later.
The six-level corner structure features a plain facade decorated with a  massive four-floor risalit looking out on Grohova Street. In addition, the risalit is topped with elliptical balconies in Čápkova Street. The ground floor is lightened by the large display windows of the commercial areas and the central entrance. The recent reconstruction and insulation of the facade destroyed the elegant detail of the alignment of the window frames with the surface of the facade.
The ground floor of the building has been occupied by the architecturally interesting Steiner Café since 2003. Its interior was designed by architect Petr Mutina of Brno's RAW studio, who used waste strips from a folding ruler factory as panelling on the walls and ceiling; the oak texture of the wood is highlighted with red lacquer in places. The quality of this architectural design enjoyed a positive reception by the Design Center professional jury, which gave the studio the Interior of 2003 award.
