The work on the Brno Architecture Manual, or BAM, a popular guide through interwar architecture, started in 2011 on an initiative by the House of Arts and with financial support from the City of Brno and the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic. The database at bam.brno.cz of nearly four hundred examples of inter-war architecture has been gradually expanded by buildings from the 1946–1989 period. It serves both as a source of detailed information and a guide through the city. You can choose one of the proposed architectural walks and download a free audioguide read by Brno actors and prominent figures on the Brno cultural scene under the direction of Radovan Lipus. The database contains hundreds of photographs and archive documents – plans, historical images and maps, additional keywords pertaining to the buildings and brief biographies of the architects. The trails with maps are also available in printed format as a free brochure from the Brno House of Arts, the House of the Lords of Kunštát and the Tourist Information Centre (TIC).
Starting from the last year the database has been extended to incorporate post-war period buildings with research work planned to be finished in 2019. The expanded BAM will gradually include edifices such as the Janáček Theatre, the International Hotel and the Continental Hotel as well as all the Brno housing estates.
The Brno Architecture Manual (BAM) paves the way for similar projects in other Czech cities: PAM in Pilsen (pam.plzne.cz), LAM in Litomyšl and, in the near future, KAM in Hradec Králové.
