František A. Dvořák

Architect

Builder, architectural draftsman and entrepreneur in the construction industry. After graduating from the German higher secondary school in Brno, Dvořák studied technical school in Vienna, which he completed in 1876. After a two-year apprenticeship, he obtained a building license in Brno and gradually established himself as one of the city’s most active builders. He designed, built and subsequently sold numerous apartment buildings and entire residential blocks, especially on the land created with the infill of the Hutter’s Pond – today’s náměstí 28. října – around which he wanted to build a unified urban ensemble. One of his most important projects was a set of apartment buildings on Schodová Street. He frequently collaborated with the architect August Prokop. As a socially highly active individual, he was a founding member of numerous public associations, such as the Club of Friends of Art in Brno (1900) and the Association of Czech Builders in Moravia and Silesia, which he headed after 1906. In 1908, he was made an Imperial Councillor.
