Franz Pawlu

Architect

One of Brno’s strangest and most important builders of the turn of the 20th century, Pawlu was made a Knight of the Order of St. Gregory for his merits. Of the many apartment buildings he designed, the earlier examples (such as the ones on Jirásek Street) were done in the spirit of historicism. His most important works, however, were large blocks of rental housing, first and foremost the set of building ensemble on Konečného náměstí and the houses on Antonína Slavíka Street. His buildings at Veveří Street 14 and Výstavní Street 24 in Brno have a distinctive Art Nouveau décor. His construction firm, which collaborated with architects Jakob Gartner, Alexander Wielemans von Monteforte and Oskar Polívka, also employed his nephew Josef Müller and his sons Arnold and Oswald.
