Josef Bertl

Architect

After graduating from upper secondary school in Kutná Hora, Bertl received a scholarship to study at the School of Applied Art in Vienna. In 1884 he transferred to Prague’s technical school, and after graduating in 1889 he worked as an assistant to professor Jiří Pacold at the school’s department of civil engineering. He gained practical experience at a number of companies while still a student. In 1893 he was hired by the company of Otakar Maderna as an authorized civil engineer, and two years later he joined Václav Nekvasil as head of the architecture office. In 1901 Bertl was named professor of civil engineering at the Czech Technical University in Brno, where he was made dean in 1902 and served as rector in 1904–1905. He also helped to draft plans for the school’s new campus. In 1905 he was awarded a professorship at his alma mater, the Imperial and Royal Czech Technical University in Prague, and in 1908–1909 he was elected as the school’s rector and contributed to the development of its campus in Dejvice. During the First Republic, in 1920–1922, he was dean of the Prague school’s Faculty of Architecture and Building Engineering. After 1914, he was president of the Czech-German Chamber of Engineers of the Kingdom of Bohemia. In addition to his university career, he was also active as an architect and designed a number of villas in Prague and bank buildings in Prague and Mukachevo.
