Augustin (August) Butscha (Buča, Butsch)
Augustin Butscha studied architecture at the Vienna Academy and apprenticed with the Vienna architect Georg Demski, who worked in the spirit of late historicism and Art Nouveau. After this, he left for Sarajevo, where several public buildings are ascribed to him. After 1894, he was living and working in Brno; written sources list him as a builder and a member of the city’s building development association (Verein der Baumeister in Mähren und Schlesien in Brünn). In Brno, Butscha was involved in the construction of the extensive municipal slaughterhouse complex, built in 1897–1899 according to plans by Otokar Burghart and Ferdinand Abt. In 1903, Butscha built an apartment house with distinctive Art Nouveau décor for himself on the corner of Špitálka and Stavební Streets, where he lived until his death. In 1915–1925, he worked at the Brno building office’s architecture department, and as such he was an important figure in the city’s architectural development during this time.
