Dvořák attended secondary school in Jihlava and subsequently graduated from the First Czech Higher Secondary School in Prague. In 1870 he began studying water and road engineering at the Czech Polytechnic Institute in Prague before transferring to Theophil von Hansen’s special architecture course at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. During his studies, he gained practical experience in the firm of Meduna & Tomášek and, later, in the studio of František Schmoranz Jr. and Jan Machytka. In 1885 he was awarded a professorship at the Imperial and Royal State Technical School in Brno, and in 1898 he was made the school’s director. He remained in office until his retirement in 1919, and during this time he among other things initiated the construction of a new school building on Sokolská Street. Professionally, he worked on architectural projects with his colleague from the school Karel Welzl, with whom he collaborated on several public religious and other buildings in Moravia. Dvořák also designed the secondary technical school in Ljubljana.
