Apartment building

C173

In 1936 Ernst Wiesner designed this block of flats for Richard Popper, a factory owner. This is a three-level block of flats with generous residential areas and the owner's flat on the first floor.
The house has an L-shaped ground plan and, like other of Wiesner's villas in this quarter, one wing (in the inner yard) is dedicated to service areas, such as kitchens, preparation rooms and servants' rooms. Two spacious residential rooms on each floor overlook the street. The ground floor housed not only two garages, but also a small shop. The spiral staircase of the inner corridor, lit by glass and concrete skylights, adds a dynamic element to the building. The light street facade is only segmented by the travertine base on the ground floor and windows with wooden blinds.
