Husovice 1900–1918

The social and economic boom of Husovice, which culminated in the granting of city status in 1912, left significant traces in its urban fabric. Husovice’s local architecture reached its apotheosis in the first two decades of the 20th century, when the local elites’ efforts at creating a progressive Czech town were reflected in the construction of highly valuable examples of Art Nouveau architecture. Well-preserved reminders of Husovice’s Art Nouveau past can be found in particular on Nováčkova and Vranovská Streets and, perpendicular to these, on Lieberzeitova Street and náměstí Republiky (Square of the Republic), where Karel Hugo Kepka designed the city’s dominant landmarks – the Church of the Sacred Heart and a monumental building for the local middle school. These structures, which were of great importance for the new municipality, were followed by a Sokol building on Dukelská Avenue.
