At the start of the 20th century, Staré Brno (Old Brno) was of a completely different character than today. From the small, low-slung Late-Baroque houses in the area around the Svratka mill-race canal near today’s Mendlovo náměstí, a new tram line led towards the area known as Bauer’s Ramp. Along its route, older buildings were being gradually replaced by luxurious rental buildings built according to plans by Franz Pawlu or Vladimír Fischer.
Hlinky Street in the Pisárky neighbourhood changes appearance as we move away from the city centre. Starting in the 1870s, this area witnessed the construction of homes for the city’s more prominent residents, including one of the most important late historicist architects, Ferdinand Hrach, who built himself a villa here in the year 1900. Other remarkable modernist villas in Pisárky were built for important Czech doctors or lawyers (Jaroslav Bakeš), Hynek Bulín), for leading members of the city’s German community (Alois Polansky, Karl Reissig) or for Jewish textile merchants or lawyers such as Hugo Hecht or Arthur Feldmann. Whatever their profession or ethnic background, they all hired renowned architects to build their new homes. The diverse range of investors perfectly reflects Brno’s ethnic make-up in the period prior to the Second World War.
From Hlinky, we can take a side trip along the right bank of the Svratka River towards Jundrov, where a villa estate began to be built quite early (after 1860), with homes for important residents of Brno, first and foremost its mayor Christian d’Elvert. New developments were added in the early 20th century.
