Václav Roštlapil

Architect

Václav Roštlapil, architect, town planner, stage designer, graphic designer and journalist, was born in Brno on 27 March 1901. In 1919-24 he studied at the Czech University of Technology in Brno, where he began working as Professor Jiří Kroha's assistant in 1926. He set up his own design studio in 1930. In 1931 he became editor and publisher of the second volume of the Horizont journal; at the same time, he was engaged in the Měsíc journal as a co-publisher, editor and graphic designer. His best designs of the late 1920s include the booth for the Lakomý company at the Exhibition of Contemporary Culture in Brno; his interiors for the Bellevue Café in Joštova Street and the Academic Café in Gorkého Street (1934) were also well-known. In 1939-42 he was employed by the Association for the Building of the Czech National Theatre in Brno. In the early 1940s he worked in the design studios of Jan Víšek and Karel Kepka. In 1948-51 he lectured at the Faculty of Architecture in Brno, and later found employment in Stavoprojekt in Jihlava, Prague and Brno. Václav Roštlapil died in Brno on 9 January 1979.
